Why “Don’t Post Just to Post” Is Outdated Advice

We’re just going to say it: we don’t want to hear “don’t post for the sake of posting” anymore.
For years, “experts” told us to wait for the perfect photo or a perfectly polished caption. But the reality? There are two strategies: one for your brand, and one for the platform.
Even Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has encouraged businesses to post more often and create content people want to share in DMs. There’s a new freedom in being more active and less precious about every single post. When you balance your business goals with how the platform works, you stop being invisible and start making an impact.
Creating a Plan for Instagram Features
To keep things simple (and sustainable), here’s how to think about the different features available to you:
1. The Grid: Your Planned Content
This is where your strategy comes to life. Aim for three core posts per week:
One sales post: Be clear about how you help your clients.
One spotlight: Highlight your team, your space, or a behind-the-scenes moment.
One carousel: Show your personality. Think photo dumps, a day in the life, or more unpolished, real content.
Tip: Add music to single-image and carousel posts. This can help push your content into the Reels feed, giving these post types more reach.
2. Stories: Your Real-Time Connection
Stories are where you show up in the moment.
Tactic: Share what’s happening right now. Repost your feed content to your stories to keep it circulating. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay top of mind.
3. Reels & Trial Reels: Your Growth Engine
Reels help you reach people who don’t follow you yet.
Tactic: Keep it simple. Use the Edits app with ready-made templates—just drop in your clips and go.
Trial Reels: Use these to test more casual, unpolished content with new audiences. If something performs well, share it to your main Reels tab. It’s a low-pressure way to learn what works.
4. Ads: Investing in Your Reach
If you’re asking your audience to take action, make sure the right people see it.
Tactic: Align ads with your goals—whether that’s growing your audience, driving website traffic, or promoting an offer. Think of ads as a small push that helps your content go further.
Finding the Balance
This is what balance looks like: your grid reflects your strategy, while Stories and Reels keep you visible, relatable, and consistent.
When you work with the platform instead of against it, showing up becomes easier—and more effective.
